What's Happening

"Educating our communities and elected officials about the needs of survivors in our local cities and towns requires year round focus. JDI is our pathway to informing and influencing the state and national agenda to end sexual and domestic violence." ~ Karen Cavanaugh, Executive Director of Womanshelter/Companeras. FY2020 Conference Committee Budget

We have great news to report on the funding front! The Massachusetts Legislature’s budget conference committee released their report for the FY20 budget.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Full $1m for prevention included in the Healthy Relationships Line item (4513-1131)
  • Full funding under S/DV services line 4513-1130—includes maintaining $3m increase from FY19. Also includes $285,000 in earmarks (that JDI had opposed), but the bottom line was increased to support these earmarks without reducing other program funding.
  • SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) line item funded at $5,505,543 which includes enough funding to cover the Massachusetts Children's Alliance (Child Advocacy Center) earmark of $900,000 without reducing other program funding.

For a recap, you can view the updated Budget Chart HERE.

The Legislature will vote to adopt the conference budget today, Monday, July 22, 2019, and send the bill to the Governor’s desk.

THANK YOU for all of your amazing advocacy and outreach to your legislators over the past 6 months to make this happen! This is proof that advocacy makes a difference!

NEXT STEPS: We will now be advocating with the Governor’s office to ensure that all of these line items remain funded at this capacity. The Governor still has the power to veto anything from the budget but considering that he proposed $1m in the Healthy Relationships Grant line and level services funding in 4513-1130, there is minimal risk at this point.

Please thank your legislators for including this critical funding!

Thank you again for all of your advocacy. We will continue to work to advocate for these critical provisions—and onward to their implementation.
